Jim Wolfe, President & Chief Executive Officer
Jim Wolfe is President and Chief Executive
Officer of Knight E/A, Inc. and an attorney concentrating on transportation,
regulated industries, real estate transactions, the Railway Labor Act and
government relations. Mr.
Wolfe began his career as a Trainmaster with the Union Pacific
Railroad in its Utah, Nebraska and Idaho operations. After receiving his law
degree, Mr. Wolfe served as Assistant Chief
Counsel and Special Assistant Attorney General for the Illinois Department
of Transportation. He provided counsel to IDOT's Bureau of Railroads, advising on
railroad and mass transit issues. After one year, Mr. Wolfe was appointed
Deputy Director Inter-Governmental Affairs. Following his work
with IDOT, Mr. Wolfe joined Amtrak Intercity as Director, Government Affairs. In this capacity, Mr. Wolfe was responsible for establishing and
maintaining relationships with state and local governments in more than 40 states. After two years, Mr. Wolfe
was asked to take over Amtrak's Midwest
operations as General Manager for the Midwest Corridor, responsible for all
operations in Illinois, Michigan, Missouri and Wisconsin. As Knight's
President and CEO, Mr. Wolfe oversees a staff of more than 70
professionals, providing services to a variety of local, state and federal
clients. Mr. Wolfe has a JD from DePaul University. He is also
a certified locomotive engineer.
Kevin Lentz, PE, Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer
Kevin Lentz serves as Knight’s Executive Vice
President and Chief Operating Officer with overall responsibility for the
firm’s operation. Mr. Lentz is a hands-on leader, providing support in
transportation operations and planning, traffic engineering, location design
and environmental impact studies, transportation management, and facility
design and construction engineering services for Knight's clients. He both
directs and participates in a broad range of planning, design, construction
and operations assignments in areas of highways, railroads, transit systems,
airports, and transportation related facilities. With more than 25 years of
progressive experience in engineering and project management, Mr. Lentz
brings a broad array of practical skills and an unwavering commitment to
developing and maintaining strong effective relationships with our clients
and ensuring that each project is completed to the highest standards of
excellence. Mr. Lentz has a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is a registered Professional Engineer in
Illinois.
Randy Byom, PE, Vice President
Randy Byom recently joined Knight as Vice
President, leading Knight’s Wisconsin practice, after a more than 15-year
career with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Mr. Byom oversees
all aspects of Knight’s civil engineering practice in Wisconsin and is
responsible for fiscal management and quality assurance on all projects. At WisDOT, he most recently served as a Project Development/Consultant Unit
Supervisor for the Division of Transportation Systems Development in the
Southwest Region. In this capacity, he was responsible for all aspects of
the consultant contracting process and project management necessary to
deliver multiple WisDOT Transportation Improvement Programs for the region. Mr. Byom has a
BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Wisconsin
at Madison and is a registered Professional Engineer in Wisconsin.
Dan Kavanaugh, PE, Vice President
As Vice President, Dan Kavanaugh oversees all
aspects of Knight’s civil engineering practice and serves as Knight's
Quality Assurance Manager. In addition to project oversight, Mr. Kavanaugh
acts as a liaison between Knight and many of its clients. He has experience
as a project director, project manager and engineer in the design and
preparation of construction documents for transportation and recreational facilities and
private infrastructure projects, including highway, streetscape and site development projects. Mr. Kavanaugh has a BS in Civil
Engineering from Marquette University and is a registered Professional
Engineer in Illinois and Ohio.
Dennis Schrock, Vice President
Dennis Schrock is Vice President of Knight’s
construction services and oversees Knight’s construction management
projects. Mr. Schrock has more than 38 years of experience serving as a
Project Manager and Resident Engineer on roadway and expressway
reconstruction and rehabilitation projects. He has experience as the project
superintendent representing the contractor as well as the resident engineer
acting as the owner's representative. As a project manager, he has been
responsible for construction operations for projects up to $140 million. As a resident engineer, Mr. Schrock has been responsible for
checking construction for compliance with plans and specifications,
materials testing, and site surveying for major expressway projects. Mr.
Schrock holds a BS in Civil Engineering.
Chuck Sommer, PE, Vice President
As Vice President, Chuck Sommer oversees all
aspects of Knight’s civil engineering practice and is responsible for fiscal
management of all projects. He has more than 20 years of experience in all
facets of design of transportation facilities including freeways and
highways, structures, and land development projects for federal, state and
local clients. His experience includes the preparation of project reports,
contract plans, project specifications and cost estimates. In addition, he
has served as Project Manager and Project Engineer on a variety of projects.
Mr. Sommer has a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of
Illinois.
Bill Murphy, SE, RA,
Lead Structural Engineer, Director of Architecture
Bill Murphy is a Principal Engineer responsible for directing Knight’s
Structural Engineering practice. He has nearly 30 years of experience as a
structural engineer, architect and project manager on a variety of bridge,
structural and facilities design projects. Mr. Murphy has a BA in
Architecture from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is a
Professional Structural Engineer in Illinois and a Registered Architect in
both Illinois and Wisconsin.
Marko Popovic, PE, Principal
Marko Popovic is a Principal Engineer and leads
Knight’s electrical engineering practice. He has more than 30 years of
experience in electrical design and advanced control systems for
transportation agencies, laboratory, manufacturing and processing systems.
His experience includes the design of communications, such as SONET, and
control systems, including SCADA, for highway and rail authorities, as well
as the electrical retrofit for existing facilities, roadway lighting, specialized electrical
systems for cleanroom operations, and hazardous gas monitoring and control
systems. Mr. Popovic holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Chicago Technical
College. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Massachusetts.
