In 2003 the Illinois Tollway unveiled its
innovative Open
Road Tolling Program (ORT) to ease congestion and improve traffic flow on the
Tollway system. The ORT concept allows motorists with I-PASS transponders to
remain on the mainline expressway as tolls are collected by
overhead electronic toll collectors. Motorists without I-PASS are directed
to traditional toll collection facilities adjacent to the mainline
expressway.
The Tollway selected Knight as part of a team of consultants tasked with working collaboratively to develop concepts for ORT plazas. We conducted a concept feasibility study of the Northwest Tollway corridor, which evaluated various locations along the Northwest Tollway for their suitability as potential toll collection sites. Knight was also responsible for the development of prototype plans for each of the mainline toll plazas. Our design challenge was to develop a plaza prototype building that fit within the Tollway's 300 foot right-of-way and could also be modified for construction at each location. The prototype was designed as a high-performance green building. We have also been responsible for mainline expressway rehabilitation and widening to accommodate ORT on both the Northwest and Tri-State Tollways.
