The Kennedy Expressway
REVLAC System revolutionized the use of reversible express lanes for easing
traffic congestion. The
$15 million system of electronically controlled and sequenced signs, gates
and restraint barriers controls traffic at points of ingress or egress from
the reversible lanes.
Not only has REVLAC improved traffic flow along the Kennedy Expressway, it has also made the freeway safer. The automated system removed the human element from traffic control. Now reversible lanes are controlled by a computerized system from a centralized location, rather than manually repositioned. New gates and barriers improve driver safety and virtually eliminate the possibility of collisions. The Illinois Department of Transportation awarded the REVLAC system its Harry R. Hanley Award for Outstanding Consulting Service in 1997.
