Knight receives IDOT Exceptional Service Award for
76th Street Bridge over the Dan Ryan Expressway

In May 2008, Knight was awarded the Exceptional Service Award from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) for Phase II engineering services provided in the construction of the 76th Street Bridge over the Dan Ryan Expressway. Knight was commended for presenting alternatives and proposing solutions to problems and concerns as they occurred throughout the project. The Firm met the aggressive schedule set forth by IDOT, preparing the revised TS&Ls in one month and completing the revised plans in two months. While the original design was completed in 2003, a new design accounting for the widening of the roadway was finished in 2005. Construction on the 76th Street Bridge concluded on time and within budget in 2007.

Jim Wolfe, Knight’s Chief Executive Officer, believes the company’s recognition on this project is a direct result of the industry-leading team Knight has assembled. “We are very proud of the ability of our staff to not only fulfill the project goals, but to surpass them.” Knight’s team for the bridge design was led by Project Manager Chuck Sommer along with Lead Structural Engineer Bill Murphy.  Throughout the course of this project, Knight consistently received positive feedback on their ability to coordinate and cooperate with Department personnel. As Mr. Wolfe notes, “Design is only one aspect in a project. We also need to make sure that the lines of communication are always open. Our ability to work with our clients to deliver the design they envisioned is what makes Knight successful.”

The Exceptional Service Award reflects the skill of Knight’s engineers as well as the Firm’s commitment to working in partnership with its clients. Recipients of Exceptional Service Awards are named by IDOT once per year to recognize the outstanding work of IDOT clients in their performance of Phase I, II and III projects. Judging criteria included timeliness, innovation, constructability, aesthetics and performance.
