Thorn Creek Bicycle Trail
An old railroad bridge proved to be the perfect location for the new, two-mile long Thorn Creek Bicycle Trail through the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. Knight analyzed the existing railroad bridges and provided three separate design options for converting the existing bridges into bicycle and pedestrian trails. The project's Forest Preserve location required extensive work to protect the natural environment.  These environmental elements included a tree survey, wetland delineation, endangered and threatened species coordination, and a drainage structure survey.

Millennium Park

Knight provided program management and urban design services for the City of Chicago’s Millennium Park, north of Grant Park in downtown Chicago. The new park serves as a centerpiece to the City's downtown and provides year-round opportunities to enjoy gardens, ice skating, public concerts, art fairs, festivals, music and dance. The project involved renovating an existing parking garage and creating a new parking garage for a total of 4,800 parking spaces. Deck was placed over the parking garages with an existing commuter railroad to create a world-class cultural and recreational park.
Ping Tom Park
Knight provided civil/site engineering planning and design services for the development of Ping Tom Park in Chicago's Chinatown neighborhood for the Chicago Park District. Ping Tom Park sits on a former vacant plot that abuts the Chicago River and is located in and around existing railroad tracks. Because of the park's location near the Chicago River, Knight prepared and coordinated plans to be consistent with the hydraulic and environmental concerns of the river. Knight's work included site utility data collection and plotting of site utilities; evaluation of three concept/schematic design alternates; preparation of concept roadway, parking and paving plans for Wentworth Avenue and on site roadways; concept underpass design; and coordination of preliminary concept sewer design.
