Knight worked with the Illinois Department of Transportation to provide Phase III engineering services for intersection improvements at IL-19 (Irving Park Road) at York Road. As one of the busiest intersections in Illinois, complex and integrated construction sequencing was required to maximize traffic flow through the intersection during construction.
Knight performed onsite inspection, layout including design changes, geotechnical inspection and testing, prepared records, maintained documentation, submitted pay estimates and change orders and worked with contractors and IDOT to safely complete construction of this significant project.
Throughout the project, Knight kept the community informed of work progress assisting IDOT in public outreach campaigns with both the Village of Bensenville (residents, community groups and village officials) as well as the O’Hare cargo industry (a consortium of businesses and O’Hare officials). Knight was sure to inform stakeholders of any major activities and traffic stage changes that would affect traffic movements through the construction corridor.

Reducing Congestion
The unique challenge of the $64 million project was integrating a major, high-volume regional arterial intersection reconstruction project within an active and closely-located railroad corridor. The intersection manages 65,000 vehicles combined with 25 freight train movements every day. Prior to the improvements, the intersection was rated by the Illinois Department of Transportation as one of the most-congested intersections in the Chicagoland area.

Our team of engineers refused to wait for problems to arise. The team was proactive and focused on trying to find ways to improve the project by cost or time-saving strategies.
