Knight’s work for the Illinois Department of Transportation included the design of one of the first Diverging Diamond Interchanges in Illinois. The innovative interchange design was a key part of the roadway improvement of IL 59 from Ferry Road to south of Aurora Avenue.
Work included a new pump station, specifications and estimates, including structure and roadway plans for the improvement . The roadway was widened and reconstructed to provide three 12-foot lanes in each direction on IL59 separated by a 30-foot and variable width barrier median. Combination concrete curb and gutter were provided at the outside edges of pavement and a closed drainage system.
Nine existing traffic signals along IL 59 were replaced or modernized and interconnected. A twin 8 by 4 foot concrete culvert was removed and replaced at the Waubansee Creek, including full reconstruction of the dual bridge structures. The bridge replacement required staged construction. Nine noise walls at various locations and retaining walls at 17 locations were proposed within the project limits.

INNOVATING SAFETY
The project was the first Diverging Diamond Interchange constructed in Illinois – an innovative way to move traffic through high volume interchanges that improves travel times while greatly increasing safety. Knight was able to use new technology which required complex signal timing and a strong understanding of how all users – drivers, pedestrians and bike riders would use the new system.
